BMW Welt Jazz Award 2019.
Rudresh Mahanthappa Quintet.
Judging by international music critics, Rudresh Mahanthappa is one of the most outstanding jazz saxophonists of the 21st century. This is also documented by the numerous awards that the son of south Indian immigrants has received for his previous work.
A major characteristic of Mahanthappa’s play is the fusion of modern jazz with the complex rhythmic structures of Indian music. In the past, the saxophonist has been a sideman for Tim Hagans, David Murry and Danilo Perez and has performed in a duo with pianist Vijay Iyer as well as producing his own projects.
Mahanthappa, together with Rez Abbasi on guitar, Bobby Avey on piano, François Moutin on bass and Rudy Royston on drums, will revisit his critically-acclaimed album “Bird Calls” at BMW Welt. Here, Rudresh Mahanthappa approaches the music of saxophone legend Charlie “Bird” Parker in his own way. Instead of rewriting original compositions, he processes the themes, solos and arrangements of the godfather of modern jazz by playing around them, rhythmically reinterpreting them or placing them in a completely different context.
The result is fascinating new compositions which are further enhanced by the highly virtuoso improvisations of Mahanthappa and his colleagues as they present powerful modern jazz full of passion with an almost inexhaustible joy of playing.
