Since 2009, BMW Welt has been awarding the coveted BMW Welt Jazz Award, one of the most highly endowed jazz prizes in Germany. Under the motto “Key Position”, the prize this year focused on a formative instrument of jazz: the piano.
After six unique soirees with international ensembles, two bands moved into the grand finale of the 2022 BMW World Jazz Awards on July 9: the Anat Fort Trio and the Marco Mezquida Trio.
In the grand finals, the two nominated ensembles exclusively presented their interpretation of this year's motto “Key Position” in the auditorium of BMW Welt. A great concert awaited all guests with the exciting decision as to who can take home the trophy designed by BMW Design. At the final of the BMW Welt Jazz Award 2022, the Marco Mezquida Trio was able to convince the renowned jury of themselves. Together with Aleix Tobias on drums and Martín Meléndez on cello, pianist Marco Mezquida prevailed against the Anat Fort Trio at the final in the auditorium of the BMW Welt on Saturday evening.
The prize for first place was €10,000, whereas second place received €5,000. And of course, there was once again our Audience Award this year, which is endowed with €1,000 and in which only the votes of the interested audience count. The event was moderated by Hannah Weiss, who in turn has already won the BMW Welt Young Artist Jazz Award.
