Under the motto “Key Position”, the BMW Welt Jazz Award was held from March to July of this year — a great return to work after a two-year break.
After six great soirees by up-and-coming international ensembles, two groups entered the grand finale of the 2022 BMW Welt Jazz Awards on July 9: the Anat Fort Trio and the Marco Mezquida Trio. In the grand finale, the two nominated ensembles once again exclusively presented their interpretation of this year's motto “Key Position” in the auditorium, the BMW Welt concert and event hall. The event was moderated by Hannah Weiss, who in turn won the BMW Welt Young Artist Jazz Award herself.
The award was finally won by pianist Marco Mezquida, accompanied by Aleix Tobías on drums and Martín Meléndez on cello. The trio thus prevailed against the Anat Fort Trio. However, the trio around pianist Marco Mezquida not only impressed the renowned jury with their performance. The audience was also impressed by the unique interpretation of the motto “Key Position” and was captivated by the great sounds of the piano in combination with drums and cello. In addition to the regular price, the group also won the 2022 Audience Award.
