From the early days of ragtime to the legendary swing era, jazz has always been impeccable when it comes to getting people to move. For its 10th anniversary, the BMW Welt Jazz Award will – once again – recall the genre’s rhythmic powers. Between February and April, six matinees will feature six artists’ performances that will either connect to and continue the tradition or mix it up with other dance genres to create completely new rhythms under the theme “Jazz moves”.
Electronic jazz with LBT.
A new generation of jazz musicians from Munich is currently gaining international traction and embarking on new, genre-bending paths. The movement is spearheaded by LBT, a trio consisting of pianist Leo Betzl, bass player Maximilian Hirning and drummer Sebastian Wolfgruber. Perfectly attuned to one another, they lead the rhythm section in the Vincent Eberle Quintett and the Jazzrausch Bigband, the latter of which was recently invited to the Lincoln Center in New York. In the three years since the band’s formation at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München, the three have already achieved several awards for their dramatic, exciting and experimental music; from the Steinway-Förderpreis and the Kurt Maas Award to the Hansjörg-Henzler-Jazzpreis. Now, they have put together an electronic jazz programme – a spectacular opening to “Jazz moves” at BMW Welt.
