BMW Welt Jazz Award 2019.
Céline Bonacina Crystal Quartet.
Visually, Céline Bonacina is an extraordinary phenomenon. The petite Frenchwoman opted for the mighty baritone saxophone at an early age, originally with the intention of playing cello suites by Bach in the original key. Later, after guest appearances in various Parisian big bands, she spent seven years as a lecturer at the Conservatory of Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean.
After her return she inspired critics and audiences alike with her debut album “Vue d’en Haut”. This unites musical elements that still characterise her sound and her changing bands: classical, jazz, funk and last but not least the influence of her long stay in La Réunion.
Together with her “Crystal Quartet”, Céline Bonacina combines dance-like grooves with rousing improvisations and complex compositions with a lot of enthusiasm and an infectiously good mood.
The saxophonist, who has played with jazz greats such as Nguyên Lê and Mike Mainieri in recent years, and who was at times a member of Nils Landgren’s “Funk Unit”, is supported by a high-calibre band. In addition to the renowned pianist Leonardo Montana is the Canadian bassist Chris Jennings, who has accompanied countless greats of the international jazz scene. Israeli drummer and percussionist Asaf Sirkis is considered a master of soulful and innovative drumming worldwide.
