Experience BartolomeyBittmann at the BMW Welt Jazz Award 2018.
From the early days of ragtime to the legendary swing era, jazz has always been impeccable when it comes to getting people to move. For its 10th anniversary, the BMW Welt Jazz Award will – once again – recall the genre’s rhythmic powers. Between February and April, six matinees will feature six artists’ performances that will either connect to and continue the tradition or mix it up with other dance genres to create completely new rhythms under the theme “Jazz moves”.

How exactly would one go about combining traditional Austrian string music and jazz improvisation into powerful, rocking fusion? The answer is demonstrated by the young duo BartolomeyBittmann: cellist Matthias Bartolomey and violinist Klemens Bittmann. Bittmann, originally from Graz, completed his classical violin training whilst studying jazz violin with Didier Lockwood. As the founder of the Beefólk and Folksmilch groups, he made a name for himself early on as a genre-bending creative. For the Viennese Bartolomey, who actually feels most at home in the classical world – for example as the solo cellist of Concentus Musicus – but is also a passionate admirer of John McLaughlin and the Mahavishnu Orchestra, the collaboration is an “outlet for energies that had been accumulating for a long time”. With their duo BartolomeyBittmann, the two will showcase thrilling, progressive string pieces, about which Nikolaus Harnoncourt said: “It’s performed incredibly well, it doesn’t getter better than that.”
