30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the BMW Museum takes visitors back in time to a divided Germany. In 1964, Klaus-Günter Jacobi succeeded in converting the engine compartment of a BMW Isetta to help his best friend, and later another eight people, escape from the former GDR to West Germany.
The short film “The Small Escape”, produced by BMW, is at the heart of the special exhibition and tells the story of the daring escape. Visitors can admire the original vehicle from the film set. They can also tuck themselves into a true-to-scale replica of the hiding place behind the bench of the tiny car to experience the cramped space in the escape vehicle.
