Like so many protagonists of the Parisian jazz, rock and pop scene, trumpeter Erik Truffaz is not from the French capital himself. The entire francophone cosmos from Africa to Asia and from Maghreb to formerly closely associated Eastern European countries comes together here to engage in a creative dialogue.
Swiss-born Erik Truffaz can now justifiably be called the Miles Davis of the Paris scene. Not just because of his aesthetic trumpet sound but also because he is constantly seeking new directions - just like the American legend - and because he is a true believer in the idea of collective music-making. For him, the band is the key focus - whether the sound is acoustic, electronic, classic jazz, jazz rock or NuJazz. And his quartet, founded in 1997, is more than the sum of its parts, with Marcello Giuliani on bass, Marc Erbetta on drums and Benoit Corboz on piano.
The Erik Truffaz Quartet performs on Sunday January 22nd as the first ensemble to take part in the BMW Welt Jazz Award 2012.
