The pros showed how it’s done - and 930 participants emulated them. Professional ice climbers Ines Papert and Stefan Glowacz got the Icetower Challenger started at BMW Welt at the opening event on November 14th 2009. In the following two weeks the "amateurs” tested their skills on the ten-metre ice tower - an exciting challenge for both beginners and experienced climbers.
The fastest climbers on each day qualified for the grand finale on November 28th 2009. The fifteen day winners won a SportScheck shopping voucher for 100 euros, those who came second received one for 50 euros.
In the final, Marcin Poznanski of Munich was the fastest. He climbed the ten-metre ice tower in just 21 seconds and was awarded the main prize: a weekend for two with the new BMW X1 at the BMW Winter Training in Switzerland, including overnight stay. Second place went to Florian Gfäller from Oberaudorf (time: 30 seconds), who was pleased to receive a DAV Summit Club voucher for a trip worth 500 euros. Oliver Kiefer from Benediktbeuern scaled the ice tower in 32 seconds and for third place won a voucher to attend a Deutscher Alpen Verein (DAV) event worth 75 euros.
On the Family Day, November 29th 2009, another 80 participants tried to reach the bell at the ten-metre mark in a "free climbing" session, without ranking.
