The ideal location for the BMW Welt is where BMW’s heart has beaten for over 90 years: on the Oberwiesenfeld in Milbertshofen, directly adjacent to the BMW parent plant, the Group headquarters – the legendary four-cylinder Building – and the BMW Museum.
At the beginning of the century, the Oberwiesenfeld served as an airstrip – the first in Munich. Two flight pioneers founded their companies here: Gustav Otto with his “Flugmaschinenfabrik” (“Flight Machine Factory”) and Karl Rapp with his “Motorenwerk” (“Motor Works”). Theses two companies merged in 1917 to form the “Bayerische Motoren Werke” (“Bavarian Motor Works”). The first recorded successful flight took place as early as 1919. Powered by a BMW IV aircraft engine, the plane achieved an altitude of over 9,760 metres – a world record at the time.
